Episode 261: Reviewing Sampaoli’s start for Argentina, and gearing up for the title run-in

16 Jun

In the two hundred and sixty-first episode of Hand Of Pod, Sam and Andrés look back on Jorge Sampaoli’s first two matches as Argentina manager, which ended in two victories, seven goals scored and none conceded – although one was a lot closer as a contest than the other. We also cast our eyes forwards towards his competitive debut at the end of August, where they’ll be no margin for error. As well as this, we’ve a title run-in to consider, with this weekend’s matches followed almost immediately by a round in midweek; by the time we next record, Boca Juniors could very well be champions.

Episode 260: Previewing Argentina v Brazil, and Boca Juniors put one hand on the league trophy

8 Jun

The two hundred and sixtieth episode of Hand Of Pod sees Sam and Andrés looking back over a weekend which saw River Plate lose ground in potentially decisive fashion to Boca Juniors, whose win over Independiente – combined with River’s defeat to San Lorenzo – sent them four points clear with just three matches remaining. It was also an interesting weekend for the relegation battle, and we look over the key results there. On Friday, Jorge Sampaoli’s reign as Argentina manager begins in earnest with a friendly in Australia against Brazil, and we also preview that.

Episode 79: golazos by the bucket full, and an Argentina Z v Brazil B preview

3 Oct

The seventy-ninth episode of Hand Of Pod sees Sam, Dan and Joel meet to discuss a goal-filled weekend. There were thirty-five goals in ten matches, and Joel drew the short straw and managed to pick what turned out to be the only goalless draw of the round to attend. We wonder how anyone could possibly have doubted Matías Almeyda’s position at River Plate (ahem), consider yet more ridiculous pressure being heaped on Julio César Falcioni at Boca Juniors, and cast our expert eyes over Wednesday night’s Argentina v Brazil ‘local national team’ friendly, which will kick off just under a couple of hours after this episode was uploaded. Enjoy.

Episode 65: Messi leads Argentina to a win, Tigre v San Lorenzo preview and more

7 Jun

The sixty-fifth episode of Hand Of Pod is another long one, because we have plenty to discuss. Sam, Dan and Dan are joined by Mariano, a San Lorenzo fan whose Twitter you can find here, to talk about Argentina’s Lionel Messi-inspired 4-0 World Cup Qualifying win over Ecuador on Saturday, how Alejandro Sabella’s doing so far with the national team, and look forward to this weekend’s friendly in New Jersey against Brazil. Then we get onto the real, earth-shaking stuff: previewing Mariano’s team San Lorenzo’s visit on Sunday to Tigre, a huge relegation clash given both sides’ standings in the table. We also look at All Boys midfielder Hugo Barrientos’ drug bust, and the Copa Argentina semi-finals (we’ll preview the final in more detail later on). Enjoy.

As usual, Mystic Dan’s weekend predictions are below, and you can click here if you’d like to have us delivered directly to your Apple-approved listening device automatically each week.

Episode 35: Tevez’s strop, Sabella’s latest test & Boca’s lead in the league

28 Sep

In the thirty-fifth episode of Hand Of Pod Sam, Dan, Dan and Seba begin with a discussion of just how much of a massive idiot Carlos Tevez is, and conclude with a reflection on Cristian Fabbiani’s suitability for the second division in Argentina. In between we discuss Wednesday night’s Brazil v Argentina friendly second leg, Seba wishes death on Diego Maradona (sort of), we wonder whether anyone can catch Boca Juniors at the top of the league, ponder San Lorenzo’s problems in the relegation zone and remark on what a lovely little player Olimpo number 10 Martín Rolle is. This weekend sees the clásico de Avellaneda between Racing and Independiente, and we also preview that, as well as answering a listener’s question on former Racing and Vélez Sarsfield star Maxi Moralez, now with Atalanta in Italy. Enjoy.

Episode 29: Alejandro Sabella’s first Argentina squad(s), and the Apertura begins

20 Aug

The twenty-ninth episode of Hand Of Pod is, as the milkmaid said to the parson, quite a whopper. That’s largely because Sam, Australian Dan and Seba have not one but two rounds of Torneo Apertura matches to look back on, as well as River Plate’s historic debut in the Nacional B (second division). There’s more, though; before we can even get onto that, we’ve got – like those Apertura rounds – not one but two Argentina squads to discuss, with Alejandro Sabella having named both a full national team and a domestically-based side to take on Brazil. Carlos Tevez’s exclusion from the former, Juan Román Riquelme’s and Seba Verón’s inclusion in the latter, the new boys’ early performances in the Primera and the start of Vélez Sarsfield’s title defence; all this and much more is covered. And next week’s will be a more sensible length. We promise.

Hand Of Pod episode 2

24 Nov

In the second episode of Hand Of Pod, Sam, Dan and Dan return to discuss last week’s superclásico and Argentina’s Lionel Messi-inspired win over Brazil. Last week’s River Plate-supporting guest Gerardo is back to give us his take on both. We also look at the race for the league title, and the Copa Libertadores qualification spots, and there’s praise for the brilliant season newly-promoted All Boys are having. The dogs, mercifully, were quieter this week, and the sound quality ought to be considerably better. Enjoy.

The Hand Of Pod theme music is composed, performed and produced by Nick Ball.
